Roving Reporter – Cup Finals
Eagerly awaited and closely fought
In the Times Cup, Blackburn Seniors A faced Independent B on what proved to be the ‘show’ courts at Hyndburn. The rallies may have been fierce and furious, but the courtly behaviour and manners remained friendly and fair throughout. A very close battle was eventually won by Blackburn Seniors A by 40 odd aces and a whip round was immediately had to buy Stuart Davey some foam padding for his knees before his wife started asking questions.
On the other side of the Hall, College and Roefield battled it out for the Smith Cup in what was to prove the longest of all the finals and certainly the closest in terms of the scores. Helen Roscoe from College certainly wins the prize not only for the biggest leap of victory as the last shot went down, but also the broadest smile on the night. As we prized Helen’s fingers from the cup, we reminded her and the College team that they would be allowed to take it home once they had picked it up properly at the Presentation Dance.
The Wilson Plate between St Matthews and Telecom B also proved to be a very closely fought final, with Telecom winning by 40 odd aces.
Well done to all the competitors who came and played with such determination and desire to win. Thank you to the supporters who came to cheer their teams on and to Hyndburn Sports Centre, our host for the three finals.
