RR 2016 – Cup Finals
Cup Finals at Hyndburn Sports Centre 12th April 2016
Well, as the crowds started to flood in, deciding which side of the courts to support and where to stand or sit, the long awaited finals between Blackburn Seniors A and Telecom A for the Times Cup; Goodshaw and Abacus for the Wilson Plate; and St Matthews (the oldest swingers in town) and Westholme for the Smith Cup, were soon under away.
Under the careful eye of Cathy Hunt, League Secretary, the matches were scored by members of the committee, who were proud to see some extremely close, well matched and competitive games played in all three cup tournaments.
For the Times Cup, a neck and neck battle all the way through with many long, exhausting rallies and much tiger balm application. The final score saw Blackburn Seniors winning by the narrowest of margins, just a dozen points, as the committee drew a collective sigh of relief after agonising over the handicapping for this particular match. The Wilson Plate was equally close, with only 20 points separating the two, extremely sporting teams, at the end of the night as Goodshaw came out victorious, delighted to have won and very reluctant to hand the trophy back at the end of the night! Last, but never least, that powerhouse that is the most diminutive of Woodheads, Pauline, went out on a blaze of glory as she led the St Matthews squad to victory over Westholme in the Smith Cup.
It was lovely to see so many supporters, young and old, at the Cup Finals. Tickets, remember, are available from Claire Edmundson for Friday’s Presentation Dance at Great Harwood Cricket Club. Get yours quickly, before they sell out.
